On the SingTel intranet: Our cycling champs
17 Mar 2011
A SingTel four-man cycling team trumped 17 other corporate teams to clinch the champion’s trophy in the OCBC Cycle Partners Challenge held on Sunday, 6 March 2011.
Our team comprised Alan Wong, Regional Financial Controller of International Group; Koert Breebaart, Director (Customer Experience); Lim Kian Soon, Regional Director (SGO), and Low Ka Hoe, Head (Strategic Investments).
They completed a 40-km route with a total timing of 4.44 hours, a good precious four minutes ahead of their nearest competitors to grab the top spot. The challenge had started out as a friendly race between SingTel and OCBC in previous years. This year, the organiser decided to expand it into a challenge for corporations.
Among the 18 teams who took part were those from Singapore Press Holdings, NTUC Fairprice, Visa, Mastercard and HP. “It was a strong field that made it difficult for us to gauge our chances of winning … especially since it was the first time the four of us rode together as a SingTel team sponsored by the SingTel Recreation Club (SRC),” said Koert. He clocked a time of 1 hour 3 mins. This was three minutes ahead of team mate Ka Hoe who bettered his personal timing of 1 hour 10 mins hours in last year’s race. Alan completed the circuit in 1 hour 12 mins while Kian Soon did it in 1 hour 23 mins. “Our average group speed was an impressive 34km/hour,” noted Alan who cycles to work. “Most motorised drivers would envy such a result in Singapore’s traffic.” Due to their conflicting schedules, the team did not get the chance to train together. Only Alan and Ka Hoe managed to fit some training together to prepare for the race while Kian Soon and Koert trained on their own.
